The 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) is underway and right now players are filled with high hopes. If all goes according to plan, they’ll head out to Las Vegas and make a poker fortune, but if you’re so fortunate, remember big scores come with big responsibilities, primarily taxes!
We asked our friends over at Kondler & Associates, the premier poker tax specialists, for things players may want to remember at the 2023 WSOP. President and Owner Ray Kondler, CPA, offered his expertise below.
If you would like to receive more information about their services or receive a free assessment, please visit our Kondler & Associates hub or call (702) 433-7075. You can also check out their booth at the 2023 WSOP.
The clock has been paused in Level 25 and players have been sent on a 30-minute break as the payouts are accounted for.

Joel Deutsch recalls an exciting hand him and Stanley Lee played together. Action began preflop as an early position player jammed all in for 125,000. Deutsch promptly went all in for 1,100,000, finding a call from the big stack Lee. All three players revealed their cards headed to the board.
Opponent: A♠9♥
Joel Deutsch: 8♠2♠
Stanley Lee: A♣K♣
The board ran out 5♠Q♥4♠6♣Q♠ with Deutsch taking both the bounty and pot down to chip up.

A player on the button raised to 100,000 and both blinds called, including Daniel Kelly in the big.
The flop came Q♠4♦8♥. Checked to the button, they continued for 80,000. The small blind flat-called while Kelly bumped the bet up to 280,000. The button stepped aside and the small blind called to see a turn.
On the 8♥, Kelly was checked to, allowing him to barrel for an additional 500,000, promoting a fold from his remaining opponent.

A player opened to 100,000 in middle position and was called by Chris Hunichen in late position. The player in the cutoff then moved all in, with the button, blinds and original raiser all getting out of the way. Hunichen quickly called with the covering stack to put his opponent at risk.
Cutoff: QxQx
Chris Hunichen: A♦Q♠
Though at risk, the cutoff was well ahead of Hunichen and remained so on the 10♣5♥K♣ flop and 4♥ turn. The J♦ river, however, improved Hunichen to Broadway, allowing him to claim the pot and bounty.

Five more envelopes have been pulled from the chest and they were all worth $25,000.
The following players were the lucky ones:
- Daniel Glass
- Roongsak Griffeth
- Kirk Acevedo
- Rajesh Vohra
- Alejandro Jauregui Reynoso
The player under the gun raised to 120,000, Joao Valli, seated directly on their left, called and both the players in middle position and the big blind came along to a board of 6♠10♦A♥.
It was checked to the original raiser, who continued for 175,000. After some time in the tank, Valli opted to raise to 450,000. All remaining players folded. This included the under-the-gun player who spent many minutes in the tank rechecking his cards before folding the A♣ face up.
