Gates Takes Opponent to Value Town

Livello 1 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante

Garry Gates opened to 500 from the hijack and a player in the small blind three-bet to 1,500. Gates made the call.

The small blind checked on the K27 flop and Gates bet 1,300, receiving a call from his opponent.

The small blind check-called another bet from Gates on the A turn, this time for 2,000.

The river was the 2. The small blind checked and Gates fired a third barrel for 7,000. The small blind made the call and tabled AQ for top pair. Gates tabled K8 for a king-high flush to take down the pot.

Bad Start For Lopes

Livello 1 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante

French rapper Bruno Lopes is having an off-day so far, as his stack has already decreased to 43,000 chips.

It continued to decrease after he opened with a bet of 500 from the button. The small blind called and AQA came on the flop. "Kool Shen" continued for 200 and his opponent check-called.

On the turn 5, both players checked. On the river 4, the small blind tried to take the pot by betting 1,200. This move was successful, as Lopes folded.

Aces Hold for Chung

Livello 1 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante

Phil Chung and his opponent in the hijack managed to get all their chips in the middle halfway through Level 1 on Day 1 of the Main Event. The hands they turned over were predictable enough.

Phil Chung: AA
Hijack: KK

Chung was the player at risk, though looking reasonably safe on a flop of 10Q2. A 9 on the turn created a slight sweat but that was soon extinguished when the dealer peeled a 10 on the river.

Yokosawa Gets There

Livello 1 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante

Masato Yokosawa was three ways on a 294 flop. Action checked to him in middle position and he bet 800. Only the player in the big blind called.

Both players checked on the 6 turn and then the big blind bet 500 when the J completed the turn.

Yokosawa contemplated for a bit and then raised to 1,800. His opponent called and Yokosawa tabled QJ for a rivered pair of jacks.

It was good, as his opponent mucked, and Yokosawa said, "Lucky!" as he collected the pot.

Wells Scoops on the Turn

Livello 1 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante

There was a raise to 600 from under the gun and Shelby Wells called from just a couple of seats over. The big blind also tagged along and they went three ways to a flop of Q75.

The preflop raiser continued with a bet of 1,100 and both Wells and the big blind called. The turn was the J and this time the action checked to Wells, who threw in a bet of 3,200. Both of her opponents folded and Wells is off to a good start in the 2023 Main Event.

Wells made a deep run last year in one of her first live tournaments ever where she eventually made an emotional exit in 97th place for $73,100. Wells mentioned on social media that she would be back again this year and hopefully go even further.

Zhu Sniffs Out a Bluff

Livello 1 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante

Yueqi Zhu was four ways on a 657 flop and he led out for 800 from the big blind. Only the player in the cutoff called.

Both players checked on the K turn and Zhu checked again when the 7 completed the board, prompting a 1,200 bet from his opponent.

Zhu sighed and put in a call and his opponent could only show Ax8x for a busted straight draw.

Zhu tabled 65 for two pair and dragged the pot.

In 2022, the Norwegian poker pro took down the second largest Main Event ever (8,663 players). This year's tournament appears to be on pace to crack the 2006 record of 8,773 entries, won by Jamie Gold.

Livello 1 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante

A player in late position raised to 600 and got called by the player on the button and Nikita Kuznetcov in the big blind leading to a 73K flop.

Kuznetcov checked and the late position player continued with a bet of 600. The button player folded and Kuznetcov tossed in a call to take both players to the 10 turn.

Action checked through to the 5 river with both players checking through to showdown.

Kuznetcov turned up the A7, causing his opponent to muck and send the pot in his direction.
