Beware the Unabomber

Phil Laak
Phil Laak

With three limpers in front of him, Phil "Unabomber" Laak raised to 875 from the cutoff. The button and both blinds got out of the way, while two of the three limpers came along for the ride.

The under-the-gun player checked the {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} flop to the limper in middle position. He tossed out three blue chips worth T500 apiece. Laak thought for a moment before putting in a raise to 3,000. The UTG player snap-folded as the middle-position player simply shook his head and tossed his cards to the muck.

Laak is up to 25,000.

Bobby and the Fish

Livello 3 : 75/150, 0 ante

We picked up the action on the flop as the dealer was spreading {10-Spades} {4-Clubs} {5-Clubs}. Three players checked to Darryll Fish, and he put out a bet of 500. One ducked out, while Jean-Robert Bellande and one more player (Player 3) called to see the turn card. It was the {5-Spades}, and it checked all the way around to the {7-Spades} river. Player 3 checked again, and Bellande took his cue to bet 1,500 at the pot. Both fish and Player 3 called.

Showdown
Bellande: {A-Clubs} {2-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}
Player 3: {A-Diamonds} {2-Spades} {5-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds}
Fish: MUCK

Player 3 gets the high half with his trip fives, and Bellande can only take 1/4 of the pot, chopping up the low as both he and his opponent make the nuts.

After that pot, Fish is back down to 16,000, and Bellande falls back to about 12,500.

Devilfish Scooped

On a board reading {Q-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{J-Hearts}, David "Devilfish" Ulliott bet 1,500 and was called by his opponent on the button, who left only 325 behind. When the {6-Clubs} appeared on the river, Ulliott bet and the button called off before showing {3-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} for the nut low and a straight.

It was good enough to scoop the pot as Devilfish was left mumbling in his heavy-Hull accent.

Who'll Win the Player-of-the-Year Title?

Livello 2 : 50/100, 0 ante

Mike "The Mouth" Matusow and Daniel Negreanu are seated at adjacent tables and were recently discussing the $50,000 Poker Players Championship.

"If Phil [Hellmuth] final tables and [Ben] Lamb doesn't, he'll pretty much have a big lead, right?" Matusow asked Negreanu in regards to the 2011 World Series of Poker Player-of-the-Year Race. Indeed, the race between Lamb and Hellmuth has added some extra excitement to the $50K Championship and will no doubt be a determining factor for both players as they seek the POY title.

Benyamine Scooped

Livello 2 : 50/100, 0 ante

We watched David Benyamine call bets of 2,400 on a {4-Spades} {K-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} flop and 3,350 on the {J-Clubs} turn. The last bet put his opponent all in, so the cards were turned up with Benyamine having a chance at the knockout.

He showed {4-Diamonds} {5-Spades} {8-Clubs} {8-Diamonds} for two pair, and his opponent's {A-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} {4-Hearts} {J-Spades} was well in front with a look to double up. The river {3-Hearts} meant no low for either player, and the at-risk gentleman's jacks up earns him the pot, knocking Benyamine back a step to about 13,400.

Bellande Surviving

With 950 in the pot and a big-blind check in front of him, Jean-Robert Bellande fired out a bet of 950 on a board reading {5-Spades}{9-Clubs}{8-Spades}{8-Clubs}. The cutoff made the call, the big blind got out of the way, and the {5-Hearts} was put out on the river.

Bellande grabbed a single orange T1,000 chip and casually tossed it in the pot. Much to JRB's surprise, the cutoff tossed his hand to the muck. While Bellande won that hand, he was still below the starting stack with 12,000.

Monnette Runs Down a Pot

Livello 2 : 50/100, 0 ante

John Monnette got an opponent all in on a {4-Hearts} {2-Diamonds} {9-Hearts} flop, and both he and his opponent had just less than 7,000 chips at that point.

Showdown
Monnette: {A-Hearts} {3-Spades} {10-Spades} {J-Hearts}
Opponent: {A-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} {2-Hearts} {5-Diamonds}

Both players were drawing to the same nut low, and both had draws to the high half as well. The turn {Q-Spades} and river {K-Clubs} gave Monette the running straight, though, and there was no low possible. He scoops the pot to nearly double to about 15,000, and the opponent was forced to cash in both of his add-on chips to start over with 10,000 chips.
